Nike was a goddess with no stories. She had no myths of her own, no family to speak of and no adventures; she was victory itself, given wings and a statue and put beside whichever god was doing the winning, and a shoe company took the name three thousand years later.

Where it comes from

Our story of Nikisha

Personified abstractions are a whole class of Greek and Roman divinity and they behave differently from the gods with biographies. Victory, Peace, Concord, Fortune and Justice all had altars and images and no stories, because there was nothing to tell: they were qualities with faces, invoked rather than worshipped in the ordinary sense. The most famous surviving statue of Victory has no head and no arms and is still one of the most looked-at objects in the world. The modern company took the name in the nineteen-seventies at the suggestion of an employee who had thought of it in a dream, and the swoosh on the shoes is meant to be the wing.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The American name has no traceable source. Its opening resembles the Greek word for victory and there is no reason to think it comes from it: the name belongs to the set built from a common prefix and a common ending in the second half of the twentieth century. Naming the resemblance is useful precisely so that it is not mistaken for a derivation.

Pronouncing Nikisha

ni-KEE-shuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The first and last vowels are reduced to nothing, which is why the record also holds Nakisha and Nekisha with no audible difference at all.

Nikisha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1977, with 95 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Nikisha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The rhythm is the settled American one and the name sounds established rather than experimental.
  • Niki and Kisha are two short forms that both stand alone.
  • Every sound in it is ordinary English.
What to consider
  • Several spellings of the same sound circulate, so spelling it out is permanent.
  • The resemblance to the Greek word will produce a confident wrong answer about the origin.
  • It is closely dated to one American generation.
