Nessa
Feminine
Nessa is at least two names. In Ireland it is Neasa, the mother of a king in the Ulster Cycle and a formidable figure in her own right. In English it is what is left when Vanessa or Agnes is trimmed from the front. The spelling does not tell you which.

The story of Nessa
Neasa belongs to the Ulster Cycle: she is the mother of Conchobar mac Nessa, and it is a measure of how the stories regard her that the king is named for his mother rather than his father — unusual in medieval Irish naming. The English Nessa took a different road entirely, arriving as a short form of Vanessa, of Agnes and of the Russian Inessa, and settling as a name of its own. Both roads reach the United States, and the name has stayed uncommon on each of them.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Irish Neasa is old and its meaning is not settled; readings have been offered and none has carried. Vanessa, the other road, has no ancient meaning at all: Jonathan Swift made it in the eighteenth century out of the first syllable of Esther Vanhomrigh's surname and the first of her given name. The Russian Inessa and the Latin Agnes also produce Nessa when shortened. Four sources, none of which yields a clean gloss.

Two syllables, stress on the first, no difficulty at all in English. The Irish Neasa is said NASS-uh or NYASS-uh depending on the dialect, which is further from the English than the spelling suggests.

The Soundra test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nessa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Soundra climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Soundra's path sketches the road Nessa is walking now.
Nessa sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

Where Nessa is headed
Nessa should hold steady through 2030 — the curve is flat, and flat curves are the most predictable kind. Its history is short or jumpy, though, so read this as a sketch rather than a promise.

The trade-off
- Five letters, said correctly by everyone on sight.
- Vanessa, Agnes and Inessa all stand behind it as longer formal options.
- A genuine Irish name as well as an English short form, which gives it two real homes.
- Its meaning is unsettled on the Irish side and non-existent on the English one.
- Nessie is the obvious childhood nickname, and Loch Ness has owned it for a century.
- It is short enough to be taken for a nickname on formal documents.
