The story of Nery
Filippo Neri founded the Oratory in Rome in the sixteenth century and is unusual among saints for a documented sense of humor — the accounts of him are full of practical jokes and deliberate self-deflation. His cult reached Latin America with the Oratorians, and Nery appears as a given name in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras in real numbers, reaching American records from there.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Rian test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nery's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rian climbed just as high around 1979, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rian's path sketches the road Nery is walking now.
Nery sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four letters and two syllables, about as easy to write as a name gets.
- Every letter is sounded, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- A genuinely likeable historical figure stands behind one reading.
- It is used for both sexes in some countries, so forms may guess wrong.
- Nery, Neri and Nerys are all close and get confused.
- The derivation is not securely documented.
