The story of Nereyda
Catalogues are a real feature of early Greek poetry and they served as memory devices before writing was common. Hesiod's Theogony lists the gods in order of descent, with long name-catalogs at each generation: fifty Nereids, forty-one river gods, three thousand Oceanids of whom he names forty-one and then says the rest are too many. Homer's Iliad has the Catalogue of Ships, an enumeration of every contingent at Troy that runs for nearly three hundred lines and preserves a geography of Bronze Age Greece. These passages are usually skipped by modern readers and they are among the oldest layers of the text. Several of the Nereid names became personal names in Greek and passed into European use: Thetis, Galatea, Amphitrite and Doris are all on the list, and the collective Nereida became a name in its own right in Spanish.

The Doni test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nereyda's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Doni climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Doni's path sketches the road Nereyda is walking now.
