Nelly
Feminine · “A pet form of Helen”
Nelly is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 7,792 girls against 79 boys since 1880.
Nelly began as a household shortening: Nell, born from the medieval English habit of saying "mine Ell" for Ellen and Eleanor until the stray N attached itself to the name for good. The -y ending arrived the same way it did for Betty and Sally, and by the nineteenth century Nelly was being written on birth records in its own right. Two light syllables, no silent letters, ending on the same open vowel as Molly and Ellie.

The story of Nelly
Middle English speakers had a habit of moving the N from "mine" onto the name that followed it — mine Ell became my Nell, the same trick that turned Edward into Ned and Ann into Nan. Nell settled in as the everyday form of Ellen and Eleanor, and later of Cornelia, and Nelly grew out of it when English added its fond -y to almost every short name in reach. By the nineteenth century Nelly and Nellie had both stopped being merely nicknames and were given outright, on both sides of the Atlantic, and the name traveled with English- and German-speaking families wherever they went. The same shape exists across Europe: Nel in Dutch, Nelli in Finnish and German, Nella in Italian.

A pet form of Helen, Ellen, Eleanor or Cornelia
Nelly's own derivation is clear — it is Nell plus the affectionate -y — but which name stands behind it varies by family and century. Through Helen it reaches the Greek Helenē, most often read as "torch" or "bright", though that reading is debated among scholars. Through Eleanor the trail goes back to Old French Alienor, whose meaning has never been settled. Through Cornelia it reaches the Roman family name Cornelius, usually linked to cornu, "horn". Any of the four is a legitimate answer.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Nelly went to 173 girls in 2025, but Neely, Nelli and Neli and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 245, which makes it the 717th most-given girls’ name of the year — 574 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 6,560 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 9,291 for Nelly itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off
- Ready-made longer names sit behind it — Eleanor, Ellen, Helen, Cornelia — so it can be the whole name or the everyday form of one.
- Nell is an established short form with centuries of use, so a shorter, more formal option comes built in.
- Two syllables, spelled as it sounds, easy for a child to write early.
- Recognizable across several languages: Nel in Dutch, Nelli in Finnish and German, Nella in Italian.
- In continuous English-language use since the medieval Nell, so it has never needed reviving from scratch.
- Nelly and Nellie are both long-established spellings, and neither is dominant enough to be assumed. Expect to spell it out fairly often.
- A well-known American rapper performs under the single name Nelly, and for many adults that is the first association the word calls up.
- The phrase "nervous Nellie" is still in circulation in American English, and a child may meet it at some point.
- It reads to some ears as a nickname rather than a full name. Putting Eleanor or Helen on the certificate is one route; plenty of families have simply used Nelly on its own, as birth records have shown for well over a century.
