The story of Rori
Ruaidhrí was a name of Irish and Scottish Gaelic royalty long before English speakers met it; in Ireland it belonged to high kings, and in the Hebrides and western Scotland it survives as Ruaraidh. English clerks anglicized it to Rory, and Irish and Scottish emigration carried that form to North America, where it settled in as a boys' name. The feminine use is much newer and largely American, helped along by the -i and -ie endings that English has long used to make names of this size, and by a Rory who appeared as a young woman on American television in the early 2000s. Rori is that newer stream given its own spelling — young as a written form, ancient underneath.
