The family took its name from the place in the twelfth century, spread across Scotland, produced earls and a field marshal, and gave its name to a town in Fife as well. Leslie moved to the front of the name in the nineteenth century and was a man's name first — it still is in Britain, where Lesley with an e is the woman's spelling and Leslie with an i the man's. America dropped the distinction and gave both spellings mostly to women, and then added more: Leslye, Lesli, Lezlie. This one is the most heavily written of them.
