The story of Nelia
Cornelia, daughter of Scipio Africanus, was widowed young, refused a royal marriage offer, and raised her surviving children herself; her letters were still being read a century later as models of Latin prose, which makes her one of very few Roman women whose own writing was preserved. Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus both pursued land reform and both were killed, in 133 and 121 BC. The statue erected to her was inscribed simply Cornelia, mother of the Gracchi. The jewels anecdote comes from a later collection of exemplary stories and is probably not historical, but it fixed her reputation. Nelia peaks in America in 1884.

Latin, from the Cornelius family — probably "horn"
Cornelia is the feminine of Cornelius, a Roman gens name generally connected to cornu, a horn, though the derivation is not certain. Nelia is a clipping of Cornelia, Amelia or Fidelia, and the record does not distinguish which. The name is also used in Spanish and Portuguese as a short form of Cornélia and in Hungarian as a form of Neli.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
