Necole changes the vowel in the syllable nobody stresses, which is the cheapest change a respelling can make. The name underneath was a man's name in France for most of its history: the philosopher and bishop who worked out how to write about money in the fourteenth century was called Nicole, and nobody thought it odd.

Where it comes from

The story of Necole

The medieval bearer worth knowing about wrote in French when scholars wrote in Latin, translated Aristotle for a king, argued that the earth might turn while the heavens stayed still, and produced a treatise on money that is still cited: he set out how a debased currency drives good coin out of circulation two centuries before the man the principle is named after. He was a bishop, a mathematician who worked with fractional exponents nobody else had written down, and a translator who had to invent French words for ideas the language had never needed. His name was the one on this page, spelled as a man's because in his century it was one.

Meaning

victory of the people

Two Greek elements, one meaning victory and one meaning a people, and the reading is settled. The French form was used for both sexes in the Middle Ages and settled on women only later. The respelled first vowel affects nothing: the syllable is unstressed and takes whatever letter is written in it.

How the name formed

  1. A Greek compound about victory and a people
  2. A French form used for men and women alike
  3. Settling on women in the modern period
  4. Necole as an American respelling of the first vowel

Related forms: Nicole · Nikolaos

Pronouncing Necole

nih-KOHL

Two syllables with the stress at the back. French gives the final vowel a short open o and English a long one, so the French and American versions of the same name are audibly different at the end.

Necole sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1972, with 80 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Necole sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is universally familiar and needs no coaching.
  • Cole and Nicki are two complete names from one certificate.
  • The meaning is a clear two-word phrase with a long history.
What to consider
  • Nicole is the standard spelling and this will be corrected into it constantly.
  • The changed vowel is inaudible, so the spelling has to be given every time.
  • It is closely tied to a stretch of the nineteen seventies.
