The story of Nathanial
Nathanael appears in John's gospel as the man sitting under a fig tree who asks whether anything good can come out of Nazareth, and he is generally identified with the Bartholomew of the other gospels. The name entered English use after the Reformation and was well used in colonial America. Nathanial, with the a in the final syllable, is a phonetic respelling that matches how most Americans actually say it.

The Verlin test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nathanial's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Verlin climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Verlin's path sketches the road Nathanial is walking now.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning that forms a complete sentence.
- Nate is available immediately as an entirely ordinary short form.
- A documented biblical name with genuine colonial American use.
- Nathaniel is the standard spelling and will be written for him constantly.
- Nine letters is a great deal for early handwriting.
- The final syllable is genuinely reduced in speech, which is why the respelling exists.
