Natalie was a name for a child born at Christmas. The Latin phrase dies natalis means a birthday, and in the early church it meant one birthday in particular — so Natalis and Natalia were given to children who arrived in late December. The name is a date before it is anything else. Nathali is the Spanish-American spelling, with the French th and no final e.

Where it comes from

The story of Nathali

Natalia was in use by the fourth century and became a major name in the Eastern churches, where a fourth-century martyr of that name is venerated; Russia in particular has used it continuously ever since. French produced Nathalie with an h, which is not etymological but has been standard there for a long time. Spanish uses Natalia and Natali. This spelling takes the French h and the Spanish ending, and American records show it from the mid-1980s, arriving with Spanish-speaking families.

Meaning

birthday; born at Christmas

From the Latin natalis, of a birth, and specifically from dies natalis Domini, the Lord's birthday. Early Christian families gave the name to children born at Christmas, which is why it has a specific date attached to it in a way that almost no other name does.

Nathali sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 37 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Nathali went to 6 girls in 2025, but Nathaly is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 193, which makes it the 767th most-given girls’ name of the year — 12,441 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 8,328 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 267,878 for Nathali itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is a specific date rather than an abstraction, which very few names offer.
  • Nat, Tasha and Talí are all available and belong to three different languages.
  • It works in Spanish and English without respelling.
  • The name is recognized across Europe and Latin America alike.
What to consider
  • English readers will sound the th, which is wrong in every language that uses this spelling.
  • Natalie, Nathalie and Natali are all commoner and will be written instead.
  • The Christmas connection is invisible unless someone explains it.
