The story of Natalyn
Dies natalis meant a birthday in ordinary Latin and was used by the Church for the feast of the Nativity, which is why Natalie, Natasha, Noel and Nadal all name a child born at Christmas. The same word was then applied to martyrs, whose feast is kept on the day they were killed, on the reasoning that death is birth into the next life; a saint's natalis is therefore the anniversary of an execution, and the calendar is full of them. The inversion is deliberate and old, appearing in the earliest martyr accounts. Natalie reached English through Russian and French use in the nineteenth century, and the American -lyn extension belongs to the last two decades.
