Narciso
Masculine · “the narcissus flower”
Narciso carries a myth and a flower, and the flower may have come first. The Greek word narkissos is close to narke, numbness — the root behind narcotic — and the plant is genuinely toxic. It is entirely possible that the flower was named for what it does and the story of the young man staring into the water was invented afterward to explain the name.

The story of Narciso
The myth is told fullest by Ovid: a young man who cannot love anyone but his own reflection, and a flower that grows where he wasted away. That story gave English a word for self-absorption, which is a heavy inheritance for a name to carry. What kept the name in use in Spain, Italy and Latin America was not the myth but a bishop of Girona named Narciso, venerated in Catalonia for centuries, whose feast made the name ordinary rather than literary. American records receive it from Spanish and Italian families, and it has always been rare here.
Meaningscholars disagree
the narcissus flower; possibly from a word for numbness
Two readings compete and they are not equally comfortable. The traditional one takes the flower's name from the youth in the myth. The linguistic one runs the other way: narkissos resembles narke, numbness or stupor, and the bulb is poisonous, so the plant may have been named for its effect and the youth named for the plant. Ancient writers noticed the resemblance too.
