Nami is a Japanese girls' name, written most simply with the single character for "wave" — a short word for a thing that keeps arriving. Four letters, two syllables, and nothing in it an English speaker has to be taught.

The story of Nami
Nami is Japanese, given to girls there long before it appeared in American records, and its written form varies from family to family: the single character for wave, or a pair of characters chosen partly for sound and partly for the "beauty" element. It also lives inside longer Japanese names such as Namiko. Its route into English-speaking countries has been cultural rather than migratory in the main: Nami is the navigator in Eiichiro Oda's One Piece, serialized since the late 1990s and animated soon after, and the name spread outward with the series. That is why the American record for Nami is short, recent, and still rising.
Meaningscholars disagree
"wave" in Japanese, though other writings give other senses
Japanese names are written in kanji, and the choice of characters carries the meaning. Written 波, Nami means "wave." Written phonetically with characters like 奈美, the second element is 美, "beauty," and the first is chosen mainly for sound. Separately, in Persian nām means "name" and nāmi "renowned" — an unrelated root that arrives at the same four letters.
Pronouncing Nami
NAH-mee
Two syllables, stress on the first: the first vowel as in "father," the second as in "see." Japanese gives the two syllables nearly equal weight. Expect some American speakers to try NAY-mee on first sight, which one correction usually fixes.

The Ambar test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nami's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ambar climbed just as high around 1981, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ambar's path sketches the road Nami is walking now.
Nami is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Four letters, two syllables, and spelled exactly as it sounds once heard — easy to say, write and remember in English as well as Japanese.
- Established in Japanese use for generations, so it is a real name with a real record rather than a new coinage.
- Works without adjustment across Japanese and English, and stays pronounceable in Spanish and most European languages.
- Rare enough in American records that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- For anyone who has read or watched One Piece, the name arrives with a specific character attached. That association is affectionate rather than awkward, but it will come up, and it may fade or hold depending on how long the series lasts.
- The written form matters in Japanese, and "wave" is only one of several possible kanji. If that connection is the reason you like it, it is worth deciding which characters you mean.
- Being uncommon here means occasional spelling-out over the phone and the odd NAY-mee, though both are small costs for a name this short.
