Where it comes from

Our story of Mollee

In nineteenth-century Ireland, groups resisting evictions sometimes operated under the name Molly Maguires, occasionally dressing in women's clothes, which was a recognized form of agrarian protest. The name crossed the Atlantic with Irish miners and reappeared in the Pennsylvania coal fields, where a series of killings was attributed to a secret society of the same name, twenty men were hanged on evidence collected by a private detective employed by the coal and railroad interests, and historians have been arguing ever since about how much of the organization existed outside the prosecution's case. What is not in doubt is that a woman's pet name was used, twice, as a flag by people who needed not to be identified.

Fashion outlook

Mollee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is warm and instantly understood, which very few names manage on a first hearing.
  • It is short, quick to write, and easy for a child to learn to spell.
  • The ending makes it visually distinct from the standard spelling, which is what it is for.
What to consider
  • Molly and Mollie are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected regularly.
  • The ending cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • It reads as a short form to some people, so formal settings will ask what it stands for.
