Where it comes from

The story of Micheline

French can stack diminutives because it has several and they combine: -el, -et, -in, -ette, -ine, applied to names and to ordinary words alike, so that a name can be made small twice over and mean nothing more than affection. English lost that machinery centuries ago and now makes pet forms by cutting names short instead. The railcar is a separate story with the same name. In the nineteen-thirties a French tire company built passenger railcars running on pneumatic tires with steel flanges, quiet and fast on light track, and the vehicles were called Michelines after the firm; several ran in France, Madagascar and Indochina before the design was abandoned. The word is now in French dictionaries as a common noun, which is an unusual afterlife for a woman's name.

Meaning

Who is like God

The Hebrew original is a question expecting the answer nobody, and it belongs to the archangel. French made Michel from it, then Michele as the feminine, then Micheline by adding a further diminutive to that. Each layer softens the name and none of them changes the question at its center.

Micheline sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1950, with 44 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Micheline sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A genuinely French name rather than an imitation of one, with a straightforward French pronunciation.
  • Three short forms in three registers, one French, one Scandinavian and one plainly American.
  • The name is formal and adult on paper while remaining easy to say.
What to consider
  • The French and American pronunciations differ by a whole syllable, so the name has to be introduced.
  • It will be heard as Michelle and Madeline, both of which are far commoner in the United States.
  • In France the word also names a vehicle, which is worth knowing before traveling there with it.
