Meriam
Feminine
Meriam writes the first vowel as an e, which is closer to the Hebrew than the standard spelling is. The woman the name belongs to is the first person in the Bible called a prophetess, leads what may be the oldest surviving Hebrew poem, and is then punished with a skin disease for questioning her brother while her other brother, who questioned him alongside her, is not punished at all.

The story of Meriam
The episode is short and pointed. She and Aaron both criticize Moses, over his marriage and over his exclusive claim to speak for God; the text gives them a joint complaint and a joint scene. The punishment falls on her alone. She is struck with a skin disease, put outside the camp for a week, and the whole people waits for her before moving on, which is the one detail suggesting her standing. Aaron is not touched. Commentators have been noticing the asymmetry for two thousand years and explaining it in various ways, none of them entirely convincing, and the plainest reading is the one the text does not comment on at all.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Hebrew name's meaning has never been settled and the number of proposals is remarkable: reference works list dozens, drawn from Hebrew, Egyptian and Aramaic, and no consensus has emerged. Given that it is the source of the most-used woman's name in Western history, the blank is worth stating plainly rather than papering over.
