Where it comes from

Our story of Meliah

It is worth being precise about what happened to the -iah ending, because it is one of the clearest cases of a meaningful element becoming a meaningless one. In Hebrew, -yah at the end of a name is the divine name: Jeremiah is Yah lifts up, Isaiah is Yah is salvation, Zechariah is Yah has remembered. That element crossed into English through the Bible. Then Mariah — which is not Hebrew but a seventeenth-century English respelling of Maria — put the sound on a woman's name. And from the 1990s the ending detached and attached freely: Zariah, Nariah, Meliah, Amariah, Kaliah. What was once a name of God is now a way of making a name sound feminine. Meliah's 2009 peak sits at the end of that road.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source establishes an etymology. The -iah ending descends from Hebrew Yah, the shortened divine name that ends Jeremiah, Isaiah and Zechariah, but it functions as a free feminine suffix in modern American naming. The Mel- opening comes from Melanie and Melissa, whose own meanings — black and bee — are settled for those names and do not transfer. Greek meli, honey, is the root of Melissa and is not documented as the source here.

Meliah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2009, with 50 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Meliah went to 22 girls in 2025, but Melia and Meliyah are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 105, which makes it the 855th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,699 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 15,307 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 73,058 for Meliah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mel and Lia are both ready-made short forms.
  • The vowels are open and there is no difficult consonant.
  • It reads immediately as a name of its family.
What to consider
  • There is no meaning behind it to give a child.
  • The stress placement is not fixed by the spelling.
  • Meliah, Maliah, Amelia and Melia are close enough to be confused.
