Mechelle

Feminine · “who is like God?”

Michael is a question, not a statement. The Hebrew reads who is like God — asked rhetorically, with the answer being nobody — so a name that sounds like a declaration of resemblance is in fact a denial of it. Michelle is the French feminine, and Mechelle writes its first vowel as English actually reduces it.

Where it comes from

The story of Mechelle

The archangel Michael is the one who fights — he leads the heavenly armies in Revelation and throws the dragon down — which made him the patron of soldiers across medieval Europe and put his name on churches, hills and orders of chivalry from Cornwall to Kiev. France produced Michelle in the twentieth century and America took it up wholesale. The first syllable is unstressed and reduces to almost nothing, so writing it with an e rather than an i records the sound rather than the source.

Meaning

who is like God?

Hebrew Mikha'el joins mi, who, kha, like, and el, God. The question form is standard among Hebrew names of this shape and the answer is understood. Michael is an archangel rather than a person in the text, which is why the name was rare among Jews and common among Christians. French made Michel and then Michelle, doubling the l and adding an e to mark the feminine, and the spelling here changes only the first vowel.

Mechelle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1967, with 268 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Mechelle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The Hebrew behind it is settled and the rhetorical question is worth explaining.
  • Shelly and Elle are both usable short forms and both stand alone.
  • The stress at the end gives it a clean finish against a front-stressed surname.
What to consider
  • Michelle is the standard spelling and this will be corrected toward it constantly.
  • Because the difference is inaudible, defending the e is a purely visual argument.
  • It is very strongly associated with one American generation.
