The story of Mayzie
Margarites came into Greek from the East along the same routes as the pearls themselves, and the word may go back to a Sanskrit term for a pearl. Scotland made Mairead and then Maisie, which Henry James used for a novel title in 1897. Mayzie appears in American records in current use.
Meaning
pearl
Through Maisie and the Scottish Mairead, from Margaret, from the Greek margarites, 'pearl'. The Greek is itself borrowed, probably from an Iranian word, and the chain reaches Sanskrit. The pearl meaning is undisputed. The -zie respelling is modern English.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mayzie went to 93 girls in 2025, but Maisie, Maizie and Maycie and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 1,779, which makes it the 186th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,850 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 903 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 17,282 for Mayzie itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Milinda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mayzie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Milinda climbed just as high around 1961, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Milinda's path sketches the road Mayzie is walking now.
Mayzie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
