Maymie
Feminine
Maymie writes a month into a nickname. The name is one of the many American spellings of Mamie, a pet form of Mary or Margaret, and this version spells the first syllable as though it were the fifth month — which is not where the name comes from, and is exactly what a family writing by ear would produce.

The story of Maymie
The most consequential Mamie in American music made the first blues record by a Black woman. Mamie Smith was a vaudeville singer who got the session almost by accident, after the woman originally booked was unavailable, and the record sold in numbers nobody in the industry had predicted — well into six figures within months, bought largely by an audience the record companies had not known existed. The result was the race records market: within a couple of years every major label was recording Black artists, and the entire commercial history of blues and jazz recording follows from a session that was arranged as a substitution.

Not established
Mamie is a nursery form, the kind of name a small child produces trying to say Mary or Margaret and an adult household then adopts. It has no separate origin, which means it can be spelled any way at all, and the record duly carries Mamie, Maymie, Maimie and Mayme. The month spelling is the most interesting of them because it points at a word that has nothing to do with the name — May comes from a Roman goddess, and Mary does not.

Fashion outlook
Maymie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is warm, short and read correctly by everybody at first sight.
- May is waiting inside it as a complete name that is thoroughly fashionable again.
- It belongs to a real period of American naming rather than to an invention.
- Mamie is the standard spelling and will be substituted regularly.
- It reads as a nickname and invites the question of what it is short for.
- The month spelling suggests an origin the name does not have.
