The story of Maybelline
Thomas Lyle Williams founded the company in Chicago after seeing his sister apply a homemade mixture to her lashes and brows, and the first product, Lash-Brow-Ine, was renamed Maybelline for her. Mail order carried it, then drugstores, and the name became one of the most familiar words in American advertising. Given names taken from brands are a small but persistent category in the records: Chevy, Camry, Armani, Chanel, Lexus and Maybelline all appear, and they behave like any other fashionable name, rising and falling with the product's visibility. The name underneath is much older: Mabel is a medieval English shortening of Amabel, from the Latin for lovable, and it was in ordinary use for eight hundred years before anyone sold anything with it.
