Maximillion
Masculine · “greatest”
Maximilian was invented. Frederick III made it for his son in the fifteenth century by joining the names of two Romans he admired, Fabius Maximus and Scipio Aemilianus, and the result is one of the very few European royal names with a known author. The modern respelling then writes a number into it that was never there.

The story of Maximillion
Frederick III, Holy Roman Emperor, named his son and heir in 1459 by welding two Roman names together, and Maximilian I went on to make the name a Habsburg fixture; from there it spread across Central Europe and, through a nineteenth-century Habsburg archduke, briefly into Mexico. The name reached English-speaking countries mainly in the twentieth century and its short form Max became far commoner than the whole. Maximillion is an American respelling in which the unfamiliar Latin ending has been reinterpreted as a word English speakers do know, which is the same folk mechanism that turned asparagus into sparrowgrass. Its best year on record is 1999.
Meaning
greatest, from a fused Roman pair
Maximilian was coined from the Roman names Maximus, greatest, and Aemilianus, itself from the clan name Aemilius. The first element is transparent Latin; the second is not, since Aemilius has no secure sense. The -million spelling of this form is an English reinterpretation of the ending as the number word, and it carries no meaning at all.

The Latham test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Maximillion's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Latham climbed just as high around 1942, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Latham's path sketches the road Maximillion is walking now.
