Where it comes from

The story of Maveric

Almost no English word can be dated as precisely as this one. A Texas landowner in the eighteen-forties left his cattle unbranded; his neighbors began calling any unmarked calf by his surname, and within decades the word had left the cattle trade entirely and come to mean a person who does not join in. American parents began using it as a first name much later, once word-names of that kind had become ordinary, and the single-c spelling arrived with them. It is one of the few names whose whole documented history sits inside two centuries.

Meaning

an unbranded calf; by extension, an independent

The word entered English in the nineteenth century from the surname of a Texas rancher who did not brand his cattle, so that any unmarked calf on the range was called a maverick. The figurative sense, someone who will not run with the herd, followed within a generation.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maveric went to 21 boys in 2025, but Maverick and Maverik are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 6,013, which makes it the 49th most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,658 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 284 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 81,337 for Maveric itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is plain English, so nobody ever has to be told what it means.
  • Mav is a ready and comfortable short form.
  • It is a word-name with a documented origin, which very few word-names have.
What to consider
  • The standard spelling has two cs; with one, the name will be corrected on forms for life.
  • The word carries a claim, independence and refusing the herd, that a child has not yet made and may not want.
  • It is strongly attached to an aviation film and a Dallas basketball team, which is either a bonus or noise depending on the household.
