Where it comes from

The story of Maverik

Samuel Maverick took four hundred cattle as payment of a debt in 1845 and left them largely unbranded, so unbranded strays became mavericks. His grandson became a congressman, and the political sense followed. The name entered American given-name use in the 1990s, and Maverik appears in the registers in current use.

Meaning

unbranded calf, independent

From Samuel Maverick, a Texas rancher and politician who did not brand his cattle; neighbors called any unbranded stray a maverick, and the word came to mean an unaligned person. The surname's own origin is a medieval English byname. The eponym is documented.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • That a whole English word comes from one man's habit is a first-rate etymology.
  • Mav and Rick are two short forms, both with real use.
  • Three syllables with a front stress, which holds up against a short surname.
What to consider
  • Maverick is the standard spelling of both the word and the name.
  • It is an ordinary English noun and carries a claim about temperament.
  • A 1986 film character is a strong association.
