Where it comes from

The story of Maurita

The name spread through a monastery story. Maurus was the first pupil Benedict took in, a boy given to him by a Roman senator, and the tale that made him famous has him walking out onto a lake to pull a drowning child from it — and realizing only afterward that he had been walking on the water, because he had been too busy obeying an instruction to notice. Whatever one makes of the story, it fixed the name in every Benedictine house in Europe. A quite separate line of the same name goes to sea: a Dutch prince called Maurits gave his name to an island in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius, which he never saw, and to a river and a fort in what later became New York.

Meaningscholars disagree

Dark, or from North Africa

Maurus described a man from the Roman provinces of the far west of North Africa, and it was used of complexion as well as of origin. Which sense a particular Roman meant is usually impossible to tell, and the word was never precise in the first place — it covered an enormous stretch of coast and everyone on it.

Fashion outlook

Maurita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It carries a very old name in a form that sounds warm rather than austere.
  • Rita sits inside it as a short form with its own long history.
  • It is rare in American use while being entirely familiar in sound.
What to consider
  • Maureen, Marita and Maurine are all close by and hers will be written as one of them.
  • The name is closely tied to one American era.
  • The meaning is about complexion and geography at once, and no source separates them cleanly.
