Where it comes from

The story of Matilde

The name came into England with a queen of the Conqueror and stayed through a granddaughter who claimed the throne and fought her cousin for it for nineteen years; English softened the name to Maud in ordinary speech. In Italy a countess of the same name held Tuscany and much of the north and stood between a pope and an emperor. Spanish, Portuguese and Italian all took Matilde, and it was widely given across Latin America into the twentieth century.

Meaning

mighty in battle

Germanic maht, might or strength, joined to hild, battle. Both elements are common in old Germanic names and the compound means what its parts do, without any softening.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is direct and strong, and it can be stated in three words.
  • It offers short forms across several languages, from Mati to Tilly.
  • It carries two documented medieval rulers, which very few women's names can claim.
What to consider
  • Matilda is the English form and will be substituted by people writing quickly.
  • The final e is sounded in Spanish and silent in English, so the name has two shapes.
  • It reads as of an earlier generation in Spanish, which is heritage to some families and age to others.
