Where it comes from

Our story of Marykathryn

Our story of Marykathryn begins in Baltimore in January 1777. Congress ordered the Declaration of Independence printed with every signer's name, and the printer was Mary Katharine Goddard, who ran the Maryland Journal and the town's post office. At the bottom of the broadside she set her own name in full: Printed by Mary Katharine Goddard. Her Katharine had an a where this one has a y, and a space where this one has none, but the pairing is the same, and it has stood on an American founding document ever since.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Neither half has a settled meaning. Mary goes back to Hebrew Miryam, for which many meanings have been proposed and none accepted. Kathryn is a spelling of Katherine, from Greek Aikaterine, whose origin is also unknown; the th came later, from a link with Greek katharos, pure, that is folk etymology.

Fashion outlook

Marykathryn sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are long-established names that everyone can spell separately.
  • Mary Kate and Kate are ready everyday forms.
  • The pairing appears on an American founding document, printed by Mary Katharine Goddard.
What to consider
  • Kathryn is one spelling among several, and people will reach for Katherine or Catherine; as one word it will also be split or hyphenated.
  • Most people will use a shortened form, so it is worth choosing which one before others choose for you.
