Our story of Marybel
A belfry has nothing to do with bells. The word came from a Germanic compound meaning something like a protecting shelter, and what it named was a siege tower — a wheeled wooden structure pushed against a wall so attackers could get over it. Because such towers were also used as watchtowers, the word shifted to mean a tower for keeping a lookout, and because a lookout tower was the obvious place to hang an alarm bell, it shifted again. At that point English speakers, hearing a word that began with bel and contained a bell, quietly reshaped the spelling to match what they assumed it meant. The original had an r in the first syllable. The bell arrived by folk etymology and then made itself at home so thoroughly that the true history sounds like an invention.

The front is Mary, whose own meaning has never been established despite a long list of proposals. The back looks like the French or Latin element meaning beautiful, but attached this way it is decorative rather than descriptive, and no source records the join.

Three syllables with the stress at the front and a secondary weight at the end. Spanish speakers put the main stress on the last syllable, which is a noticeably different name.

Fashion outlook
Marybel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves are familiar, so nothing has to be spelled out by sound.
- It shortens cleanly to either half and both are complete names.
- The Spanish equivalent is close enough that the name travels.
- Maribel, Marybelle and Maribelle are all recorded and will be written for it.
- English and Spanish stress it differently, so a bilingual family hears two versions.
- The second half does not mean what it looks like it means in this position.
