Where it comes from

The story of Maryanne

Mary and Anne were the two most-used English women's names for three hundred years, and combining them was natural — Mary Anne, Marianne and Maryanne all appear from the eighteenth century onward. The French Marianne became the personification of the Republic, which is a separate story. American use peaked in the middle of the twentieth century, when double names were still commonly given and often written as one.

grace

Anne is documented: from Hebrew Hannah, grace or favor. Mary's own origin is genuinely unsettled — bitterness, rebellion and an Egyptian source have all been proposed for the underlying Miriam, and none is established.

Maryanne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1960, with 379 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maryanne went to 41 girls in 2025, but Marianne is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 151, which makes it the 809th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,836 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 10,644 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 39,202 for Maryanne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are among the most recognized women's names in the language.
  • Mary and Annie both work alone at any age.
  • Written as one word, it survives forms that discard a second given name.
What to consider
  • Systems and teachers will split it back into Mary Anne or drop the second half.
  • It is strongly associated with one mid-century American generation.
  • Mary's own meaning is genuinely unknown, which surprises people.
