Marya is how Poland spelled Maria until 1936. A spelling reform that year replaced the y with an i in a whole class of words, so a Polish document with Marya on it can be dated: it was written before the reform, or by someone who had left before it.

Where it comes from

The story of Marya

Polish orthography was reformed in 1936, and one of the changes replaced ya, ye and yi with ia, ie and ii in words of foreign origin, so Marya became Maria, Anglia stayed and Danya became Dania. Polish emigrants who left before then took the older spelling with them, which is why American records of the early twentieth century hold Marya in numbers. Russian meanwhile uses Marya as the folk and literary form of Mariya, and it is the name of the heroine in a great many Russian fairy tales, Marya Morevna among them. Its best year in United States records is 1965.

Not established

Maria descends from Hebrew Miryam, whose meaning is genuinely unresolved; bitter, beloved and an Egyptian element meaning beloved of a god all have support. Marya is the pre-1936 Polish spelling and also a Russian folk form of the same name, and neither changes the sense. The y is an orthographic matter rather than a linguistic one.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
