Where it comes from

The story of Marne

Twice in four years the war turned on the same river. The first time, in the opening weeks, a German advance that had been expected to end the war was stopped a few dozen miles from Paris; the second time, four years later, the last great offensive was halted in the same country and the retreat began. Between them sits one of the best stories of the war and one of the most inflated: Paris taxis were requisitioned to carry reserve troops to the front, several hundred of them, ferrying a few thousand men — a real event that has grown in the retelling until the taxis are sometimes said to have saved the city by themselves.

Meaning

From the river Marne

The river's own name is pre-Roman and has not been explained. As a personal name it carries the river and, for the generation that used it, a specific pair of battles.

Marne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1970, with 56 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Marne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, firm and read correctly on sight.
  • It points at a real place with a documented history.
  • It works for either child.
What to consider
  • The historical association is specific and now largely forgotten, so it will need explaining.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
  • It will be heard as Marnie or Marlene by people working from sound.
