Marlene was made in the 1920s by a woman contracting her own name. Marie Magdalene became Marlene, and within twenty years it was attached to the most played song of the Second World War — Lili Marleen, which German and Allied troops both listened to, on the same frequency, from opposite sides of the line.

Where it comes from

The story of Marlynn

The song was recorded in 1939, went almost unnoticed, and then a German forces radio station in Belgrade began playing it nightly at a fixed time. Soldiers on both sides tuned in — the Afrika Korps and the Eighth Army listened to the same broadcast — and it was recorded in English within a couple of years. The contraction that produced the name was a personal decision by one performer, and it stuck so hard that Marlene now looks like an old German name and is barely a century old. The American Marlynn belongs to the same decades and may equally be Mary with the -lyn ending that was attached to everything at the time.

Not established

If the name is Marlene respelled, it is Marie and Magdalene run together, and neither half has a settled meaning — Maria's origin is unknown and Magdalene is a place name. If it is Mary plus the -lyn ending, the ending carries nothing. Either way there is little to state with confidence.

Marlynn sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1955, with 25 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Marlynn went to 7 girls in 2025, but Marlyn and Marlin are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 43, which makes it the 917th most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,015 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 37,378 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Marlynn itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables with nothing in the spelling to explain.
  • Three short forms, two of which serve either child.
  • The name behind it can be dated precisely, which few can.
What to consider
  • It is a homophone of the fish, and children will find that.
  • Marlene, Marlyn and Marilyn are all in use and close enough to be confused.
  • It is strongly represented among older generations and places the name in the last century.
