Marlowe began as an English place-name — a village on the Thames in Buckinghamshire — and reached given-name status the long way round, by way of a surname carried by the Elizabethan playwright Christopher Marlowe and, three centuries later, by Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles detective Philip Marlowe. The sound is two clean beats, MAR-loh, ending in the same open vowel that closes Willow and Harlow.

The story of Marlowe
The Buckinghamshire village of Marlow sits where the Thames once spread into marsh, and its name records exactly that: the ground left over when the water went. Families from such places took the place-name with them as a surname, and the -owe spelling settled alongside plainer Marlow. Christopher Marlowe, who wrote Doctor Faustus and Tamburlaine in the 1580s and early 1590s, fixed that spelling in English memory; Chandler's fictional detective, from the late 1930s onward, gave it a second life in American ears. The step from surname to first name is a thoroughly American habit, and Marlowe made it recently — the great majority of people carrying it are children.

From Old English mere (lake, pool) and lāf (what remains, leavings). The same elements are sometimes glossed more picturesquely as "driftwood" — the leavings of a mere — but it is one reading, not two competing ones.

The Corina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marlowe's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Corina climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Corina's path sketches the road Marlowe is walking now.

The trade-off
- A spelling already known to most English speakers through Christopher Marlowe, so it is read correctly on sight even by people meeting the first name for the first time.
- Two syllables, no silent traps beyond the final -e, and the same stress pattern in every English-speaking country.
- Carries ready-made short forms — Marlo, Lo, Mar — that need no explaining.
- A documented line running from an Old English place-name through centuries of surname use, unbroken and traceable.
- Marlowe, Marlow and Marlo all sound the same, so the -owe spelling will be confirmed at every appointment, roster and coffee counter for life. Worth deciding early which one you want written down.
- It is a surname first and travels to both boys and girls, so a Marlowe on a class list carries no gender signal. Forms and strangers will guess, sometimes wrong.
- The name is climbing quickly right now. A child born this year is unlikely to meet another, but that may not hold by the time she reaches high school.
- The Chandler detective is the strongest cultural echo for some adults — hardboiled, trench-coated, and entirely benign as associations go.
