Where it comes from
From Karl to Lottie
The story of Lottie
Charlotte arrived in English as the French feminine of Charles, and English speakers did to it what they do to every long name: they clipped it. German and Dutch speakers had already made Lotte from the same source — that is the Lotte of Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werther in 1774 — and English added its own -ie. By the Victorian era Lottie was being written into parish registers and census pages as a full given name, not merely a household nickname, and it crossed the Atlantic in that condition. It has stayed steadier in Britain than in America, and still charts in Scotland and in England & Wales today.

The trade-off
- Spelling is guessable from the sound, and the name is already familiar to anyone who knows Charlotte.
- Comes with a ready formal option: parents who want a longer legal name can register Charlotte and use Lottie daily.
- An unbroken record in American statistics stretching back to the first years such records were kept.
- Works in English and German-speaking countries alike, and currently charts in Scotland and England & Wales.
- Vintage rather than invented — a revival name with documented history behind it.
- It is a diminutive by origin, so it stays in a friendly register for life. Some parents like that; others prefer to have Charlotte on the birth certificate and keep Lottie for everyday.
- People who know it as Charlotte's nickname may assume it is short for something and ask for the 'real' name, or write Charlotte on forms without being asked.
- Lotti, Lotty and Lottie all exist, so expect the occasional correction — though the -ie ending is the common one in both Britain and America.
