Where it comes from

Our story of Marlea

Latin mare is the sea, and it went into every Romance language almost unchanged: mar in Spanish and Portuguese, mare in Italian, mer in French. English did not inherit it, having its own perfectly good word, but borrowed a whole vocabulary built on it: marine, maritime, submarine, marina, mariner, and the rosemary that grows by the coast and means dew of the sea. The same root probably sits in the name Mary, though that is argued over and the competing readings are quite different. What is certain is that the first syllable of a great many European names is one letter from the word for the sea, which is a pleasant thing to be near even when it is a coincidence.

Maria, Marlene and Marla have all been offered for the front and none is documented. The ending is a free one, used across a whole generation of American names, and it carries no sense of its own.

Fashion outlook

Marlea sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mar and Lea are both available as short forms and both stand alone.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write, with nothing difficult in it.
  • It works comfortably in English and Spanish-speaking households alike.
What to consider
  • Two readings are in circulation and the spelling chooses neither, so the name gets checked on most first meetings.
  • Marlee, Marlea and Marleigh are all in the record and will be confused with each other.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
