Marlane
Feminine · “probably from Marlene”
Marlane is one letter from a name that was made famous by one actress and one letter from a family of American builds, and the record does not separate them. The word it opens with is an agricultural term that shaped the English landscape and then disappeared from the language.

The story of Marlane
Marl is a clay with a high lime content, and for centuries English farmers dug it out of pits and spread it on acid or sandy fields to sweeten them. Marling was hard, unglamorous and enormously effective: it could turn poor ground into decent arable, and agricultural writers from the thirteenth century onwards argue about how thickly to lay it. The practice left its mark on the map, because every village that did it had a marl pit, and hundreds of them are still named on ordnance maps — usually as ponds now, since the pits filled with water once they were abandoned. The word has otherwise fallen out of use almost entirely; farmers now spread lime from a lorry and nobody digs. The pits remain as a scatter of small round ponds across the English midlands with nothing to explain them.
Meaningscholars disagree
probably from Marlene, itself two names contracted
If it respells Marlene, it inherits a contraction of Maria and Magdalene made in Germany. If it is an American build on a free front and a free ending, it means nothing. The two accounts fit the record equally well and nothing chooses between them.
Pronouncing Marlane
mar-LAYN
Two syllables with the stress at the back. The ending says ayn rather than the ee-nuh of the German original, which is the audible difference between this and the commoner name.

Fashion outlook
Marlane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Both halves detach as short forms and neither sounds like the other.
- Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
- It is uncommon while containing nothing a reader has to be taught.
- Marlene, Marlaine and Merlane are all recorded and will be written for it.
- It is close enough to the commoner name that people will hear that instead.
- Which of the two possible origins applies is not recorded.
