Markanthony
Masculine · “of Mars”
Markanthony is not two names. It is one man's name, written the way English has always written him — Mark Antony, the general who ruled a third of the Roman world, lost it at Actium, and has been on stage in one of Shakespeare's plays ever since. Closing up the space turns a historical figure into a single first name, which is a very American thing to do with a very Roman person.

The story of Markanthony
Marcus Antonius was Caesar's lieutenant, one of the three men who divided Rome after the assassination, and the losing side of the war that made Augustus emperor. His name survived in English through Plutarch, through Shakespeare, and through the ordinary popularity of Anthony as a saint's name. Running it together as one word belongs to American naming practice, where double first names are said whole and forms have only one box for them. It is worth noticing that the same spelling has been carried in modern times by a singer, which is why the name reads to many Americans as contemporary and Latin rather than classical.
Meaningscholars disagree
of Mars, and a Roman family name of unknown meaning
Marcus belongs to Mars. Antonius is the harder half: it was the name of a Roman clan, probably Etruscan in origin, and the Romans themselves had no explanation for it. The h that English puts in Anthony was added in the Renaissance on the false assumption that the name came from the Greek anthos, a flower. It did not, and the letter has stayed anyway.

Pronouncing Markanthony

Four syllables with two stresses, one on each half, because it is being said as two names rather than as one word. The Italian version, Marcantonio, really is a single word and moves the stress accordingly; the American one does not.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off
- Both halves are among the most familiar names in English, so nothing needs explaining.
- It offers two entirely different everyday names, and a boy can choose which he answers to.
- The closed spelling survives databases and forms, which the spaced version often does not.
- It carries a documented historical figure rather than a general classical flavor.
- Eleven letters in a first-name box is a real inconvenience, repeated on every form for life.
- People will read it as one word and try to say it as one, producing something no one intended.
- The man it names ended his life on the losing side of a civil war, which anyone who knows the history will remember.
