Marjie
Feminine · “a pearl”
Marjie writes the soft g with a j and removes the only ambiguity the name has. English g is soft before an e and hard before an a, except when it is not — get, give, gear and gift are all hard — and a name beginning Marg leaves a reader guessing until they reach the vowel.

Our story of Marjie
The soft g is one of the least reliable things in English spelling, and it is French's fault. Latin had one g, always hard. French softened it before certain vowels and English borrowed the words with the softening intact, while keeping its own Germanic words hard — so gift and giant begin with the same letter and different sounds, and no rule covers both. Writing the sound with a j settles it, and the only cost is that the name stops looking like the one it came from.
Meaning
a pearl, at one remove
The name is a short form of Marjorie, which is Margaret worn down in medieval English mouths. Writing the consonant as a j is not a modernization: the two spellings have alternated since the Middle Ages, because the sound is the same and English never decided which letter owned it.
How the name formed
- a Greek word for a pearl gives Margaret
- medieval English produces Margery and Marjorie
- the g and j spellings alternate for six centuries
- Marjie appears in American records in the 1910s
- peaks at the end of the 1920s
