The story of Marianela
Benito Perez Galdos wrote it in the middle of a long series of novels about ordinary Spanish life, and this one is short and unusually direct: Nela is poor, considered ugly, and is the eyes of a rich blind man who has never seen her; a doctor restores his sight. The ending has been argued about for a hundred and fifty years. What is not argued about is the effect on the name — Marianela was not in use before, and it has been in Spain, Venezuela, Mexico and the Dominican Republic ever since, which is a clean case of a novel putting a name into circulation and supplying its short form at the same time.

grace, at one remove
A compound of Maria and Manuela or Ana in some accounts, and in others a coinage of the novelist. Maria has never had an established meaning. What is documented is the book: the name is rare before it and used steadily in Spanish-speaking countries afterwards.

The Adamae test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marianela's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Adamae climbed just as high around 1917, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Adamae's path sketches the road Marianela is walking now.
Marianela sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A precisely documented origin in a specific novel, which very few names can offer.
- The short form comes with it and is used by everyone.
- Five open syllables with a clear stress and no cluster anywhere.
- Five syllables is a great deal of name, and it will be shortened by others immediately.
- Outside Spanish-speaking families the reference will need explaining every time.
- The novel's heroine is treated badly by almost everyone in it, which readers may mention.
