The story of Marcia
The Marcii were an old family that reached the consulship repeatedly in the republic, and their name spread through the empire in both masculine and feminine forms. Early Christian martyrs carried it into the medieval saints' calendars, which is how a name built on a pagan god survived into Christian naming. English took the Latin spelling and gave it an English sound, and American use rose through the 1930s and 1940s, peaking around 1950 alongside the phonetic respelling Marsha.

The Genevieve test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marcia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Genevieve climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Genevieve's path sketches the road Marcia is walking now.
Marcia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A genuine Roman name with an unbroken record from the republic to the present.
- The Latin spelling reads as more formal than the phonetic one while sounding the same.
- It is standard in Spanish and Portuguese, so it crosses borders without adjustment.
- The spelling does not predict the English pronunciation, which strangers will get wrong.
- Marcia and Marsha are both common, so the written form always has to be specified.
