Marchelle

Marchelle sits between two names and borrows from both. Read as Marcelle with an h, it is the French feminine of a Roman name. Read as Michelle with the first vowel changed, it is a different name entirely. The spelling makes both available and commits to neither, and it also writes a month into the middle of the word, which is closer to the truth than it looks.

How old is the name Marchelle?

Marchelle first appears in US birth records in 1947 — 78 years ago. The typical Marchelle alive today was born around 1970, making them about 55 years old. About 1,500 people named Marchelle are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Marchelle

The month and the name really are related. March is named for the same god, and in the Roman calendar it was the first month of the year, which is why the numbered months are all wrong by two: September is built on the word for seven, October on eight, November on nine, December on ten, and every one of them sits two places later than its name claims. The year was moved to January at some point in the Republic and nobody renumbered anything. The war god got the opening month because that was when campaigning season began, and a large family of Roman names was built on his: Marcus, Marcellus, Marcia, Martinus and the rest. This name, if it descends from that side, is the far end of a very long line. If it descends from the other side, it is unrelated to any of it, and no amount of spelling analysis will tell you which.

Meaning

of Mars

If the parent is Marcelle, the line runs back through Marcellus and Marcus to the god of war, and it is settled. If the parent is Michelle, the meaning is entirely different and comes from Hebrew. The two readings share no history at all, and the spelling gives no way to choose. Families using this name have generally had one or the other in mind, and the name means whichever one they meant.

How the name formed

  1. Marcus and Marcellus, built on the war god
  2. Marcelle as the French feminine
  3. Michelle in wide American use at the same time
  4. Marchelle, borrowing from both

Two syllables with the stress at the back and the ch said as sh, following the French original. A minority say mar-CHELL with an English ch, which the spelling permits and which turns it into a noticeably different name.

Marchelle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1963, with 64 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Marchelle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The back stress gives it a lift, and the ending is one English speakers handle without thinking.
  • Chelle works from childhood onwards and belongs to the name rather than being imported.
  • It is rare while sounding entirely familiar, which is a comfortable place for a name to sit.
What to consider
  • The ch will be said as an English ch by a good number of people, and the correction never quite ends.
  • It will be written as Marcelle or Michelle by anyone taking it down from speech.
  • The two possible parent names mean completely different things, so the answer to what it means depends on the family.
