The story of Marcellous
Marcus Claudius Marcellus took Syracuse for Rome in 212 before the common era, and the name stayed in the Claudian family and then in Christian use, with several early popes and martyrs. Latin -us endings are unfamiliar to English speakers, who meet them mainly in scientific names and in Roman history, and the ordinary response to an unfamiliar ending is to resolve it toward a known one: -ous is one of the commonest endings in English, and the reshaping is automatic rather than deliberate. The same mechanism turned asparagus into sparrowgrass and crayfish out of a French word for a crab. Marcellous's best year in United States records is 1973.

little Marcus, of Mars
Latin Marcellus is a diminutive of Marcus, which is generally connected to Mars, the god of war, though that derivation is traditional rather than proven. The -ous ending of this spelling is an English adjective suffix, from Latin -osus, and has nothing to do with the Latin name's own ending; it is a reinterpretation of an unfamiliar shape toward a familiar one.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
