Malichi
Masculine · “my messenger”
Malichi is Malachi with a different vowel in the middle, and the name underneath has an unusual problem: nobody is certain it is a name at all. The last book of the Hebrew prophets opens by attributing itself to Malachi, and the word means my messenger — which is also exactly what the book says a few chapters later about the figure God will send. It may be a title that hardened into a person.

The story of Malichi
The book of Malachi is short, sharp and last in the Christian ordering of the Hebrew prophets, which gave the name a prominence out of proportion to its length. English Protestants took it up along with the rest of the prophetic names; Ireland reinforced it separately, since Máel Máedóc, a twelfth-century archbishop of Armagh, is known in Latin as Malachy. American use is recent and largely modern, and once a name is being given in numbers its spellings multiply — which is where the i in the middle comes from.
Meaning
my messenger
From Hebrew mal'akhi, built from mal'akh, a messenger — the same word that is translated angel when the messenger is divine. What is uncertain is not the meaning but whether it was ever a personal name before the book gave it one.

Pronouncing Malichi
MAL-uh-kye
Three syllables, stress on the first, with the last rhyming with sky. The middle vowel is reduced to almost nothing in speech, which is precisely why it can be written a or i without changing anything.

The Paddy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Malichi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Paddy climbed just as high around 1948, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Paddy's path sketches the road Malichi is walking now.
Malichi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It sounds identical to a well-known name, so nothing has to be explained aloud.
- The meaning is clean, documented and easy to say in three words.
- Both Mal and Kai are available, and they sound nothing like each other.
- Malachi is the standard spelling, and this version will be corrected toward it constantly.
- The difference is inaudible, so the spelling has to be given letter by letter forever.
- Malakai, Malaki and Malachy are also in circulation, which multiplies the confusion.
