Where it comes from

Our story of Maison

Two things were true in American naming around 2000 and this spelling sits between them. Mason was rising very fast for boys, reaching the American top ten within a decade, and rising names throw off respellings — Maison, Mayson, Maisen. At the same time French words were being used as girls' names with some frequency: Belle, Bijou, Chanel, Maison. So a Maison born in 2000 could be a French word chosen for its sound and its associations with fashion houses, or a girl given a respelling of a boys' name that was climbing at the time, which is a well-established American pattern in itself. The record shows both boys and girls with the name and cannot tell you which reasoning produced either.

A house, if French; a stonemason, if from Mason

French maison, a house or household, comes from Latin mansio, a dwelling, from manere, to remain — the same root as mansion and manor. Mason is an English occupational surname for a worker in stone, from Old French masson. The two words are unrelated. Maison as an American given name serves both and the record does not distinguish.

Maison sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2004, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maison went to 23 girls in 2025, but Mayson and Maysoon are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 71, which makes it the 889th most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,521 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 22,638 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 69,881 for Maison itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It sounds exactly like a very familiar name.
  • Maisie works as a warm short form.
  • Everyone can say it after one hearing.
What to consider
  • It is used for both sexes and reads as masculine in America.
  • The French word and the English name have nothing to do with each other.
  • Mason is the standard spelling and will be written for it.
