Where it comes from

Our story of Maily

Ours, offered as ours. Vietnamese hoa mai is the yellow apricot blossom that opens for Tết in the south of the country, and a branch of it in the house is what marks the new year — the northern equivalent is the peach. Mai is one of the most-used Vietnamese women's names because of it. Written into an American form that allows one first name, Mai Ly becomes Maily, and the blossom is genuinely at the front of it.

Meaningscholars disagree

apricot blossom, or Mary

Vietnamese mai names the yellow apricot blossom of the lunar new year and ly is a plum or a unit; Mai Ly written closed becomes Maily. Separately Spanish-language naming produces Maily from María and a diminutive ending. Both are documented.

Maily sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2010, with 48 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Maily went to 38 girls in 2025, but Mayli and Maili are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 93, which makes it the 867th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,965 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 17,282 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 42,297 for Maily itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Mai is a complete Vietnamese name in its own right and a ready short form.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
  • Six letters and two syllables, quick to write.
What to consider
  • Vietnamese is tonal and the tones are lost entirely in English spelling.
  • The two possible sources are unrelated, so the meaning depends on the family.
  • Maily, Mailee and Maylee are all in use and none is dominant.
