Where it comes from

The story of Maebelle

Mabel was ordinary in medieval England and then declined sharply, surviving mainly in Ireland; Charlotte Yonge's writing on names and a general Victorian medieval revival brought it back in the nineteenth century, and it became one of the standard American names of the 1880s and 1890s. The respellings arrived with it — Maybelle, Maybell, Maebelle, Mabelle — mostly reading the first syllable as the month or as a modal verb rather than as a clipped Ama-. That obscured the origin further, which is why the name is now often assumed to be a compound of May and Belle. It is not. Maebelle peaks in 1884.

Meaning

Latin "lovable"

From amabilis, lovable, from amare, to love. The medieval name Amabel lost its first syllable to give Mabel, a very common English name from the twelfth century onward. Isabel's -bel, by contrast, is the tail end of Elisabeth and has nothing to do with beauty or love. Maebelle is a nineteenth-century American respelling with the ae digraph and the French -elle ending.
