The story of Madina
Yathrib took a new name when the Prophet migrated there in 622 — the city, simply — and the Islamic calendar counts from that year. The medina quarters of Fez, Tunis and Marrakesh carry the same word. Madina is used as a given name across Muslim and Central Asian naming and is in current American use.
Meaning
city
From the Arabic madina, 'city', from a root relating to law and settlement. Yathrib was renamed Madinat an-Nabi, 'city of the Prophet', after the migration, and shortened to al-Madina. The old walled quarter of North African cities is the medina from the same word. The Arabic is documented.

About 1 girl in 17,282 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 20,345 for Madina itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Talena test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Madina's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Talena climbed just as high around 1976, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Talena's path sketches the road Madina is walking now.
Madina sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- That a city renamed itself simply 'the city' is a first-rate fact.
- Madi and Dina are two short forms, both with real records.
- Three syllables of open vowels, which carries unusually well.
- It is a sacred place name, which some families will weigh.
- Medina is the commoner English spelling.
- It reads as specifically Muslim.
