The story of Mabelle
Amabilis was a medieval name, and English contracted it to Mabel by dropping the first syllable — the same process that turned Elizabeth into Betty by working from the other end. Mabel was in ordinary use by the twelfth century, faded, and returned strongly in the nineteenth. Mabelle is the French-looking respelling of that Victorian revival, which reads the second half as belle, and it peaked around 1918.
Meaning
lovable
From the Latin amabilis, 'lovable' or 'worthy of love', which was used as a name in medieval Europe and worn down in English to Mabel. The French belle, 'beautiful', is not the source — but the resemblance is exactly what encouraged the Mabelle spelling.

The trade-off
- The meaning is transparent, attractive and undisputed.
- Unlike most respellings, this one actually changes the stress rather than only the look.
- Mae and Belle are both available and both stand alone.
- Mabel is far commoner and is stressed differently, so the two are easily confused.
- The belle ending is a folk association rather than the name's real second half.
- It is period-coded to the early twentieth century.
