The -ae at the end is Latin doing no Latin work. In Latin it is a grammatical ending, the mark of a feminine genitive or plural, and it turns up in English only in words nobody declines any more: algae, larvae, formulae. American parents borrowed it as a decoration, and Lynnae, Renae and Janae are the result.

Where it comes from

The story of Lynnae

Lind is one of the most productive elements in old Germanic women's names — Rosalind, Belinda, Sieglinde, Gerlinde — and philologists have argued for a century about what it meant. The linden tree is the obvious candidate; shields were made of linden wood, which would make it a warrior element; and there is a separate adjective meaning soft or flexible. All three are defensible and the names are old enough that the makers may not have distinguished them. Lynn arrived in English separately, from Welsh llyn and the surnames built on it, and the two converged. The ae ending is much later and purely visual: it changes nothing about how the name is said.

Meaningscholars disagree

lake, or soft

Lynn is either the Welsh llyn, a lake, taken from surnames and place names, or a short form of Linda. Linda in turn is from the Germanic element lind, whose own reading is disputed between the linden tree, a shield made of linden wood, and an adjective meaning soft. Spanish linda, pretty, is unrelated and a coincidence.

Lynnae sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1971, with 27 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lynnae went to 8 girls in 2025, but Lynae is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 13, which makes it the 947th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,970 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 123,636 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 200,908 for Lynnae itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables and a spelling that, once seen, is easy to remember.
  • Lynn works immediately as a short form and serves either child.
  • The elements behind it are old and documented even where their meaning is argued.
What to consider
  • The stress is genuinely unsettled between the two syllables.
  • Lynae, Linnae and Lynnea are all in use, so the spelling will be given every time.
  • The ae ending is borrowed decoration, and some readers will treat it as a typo.
